On June 15, 2014 the Board of Directors of the Midland Concert Band announced that Joel Wiseman has been selected as the new Conductor of the Band, following the retirement of Gary Burgess, who directed the band for 18 seasons.

On acceptance of his role as the MCB Conductor, Joel stated: “I am, of course, honored and thrilled to be selected for this role. The Midland Concert Band has long been a shining star in the musical tradition of Midland. I look forward to continuing that tradition, serving the band and the community, and to getting to know the members even better than I do now!”

Joel Wiseman is a graduate of Saginaw Valley State University. Joel studied Music Education and is currently a music teacher at the International Academy of Saginaw. During his time there, he has helped to create a music curriculum for general music and has also started the school’s first band program. Educating today’s youth in the art of music is very important to Joel and he hopes he can continue to inspire tomorrow’s society of music enthusiasts for years to come.

Joel is currently serving in the 338th Army Band. He has served with this band since 2006 and has performed in many places from coast to coast. Serving our soldiers and honoring those who have served in the past is one of Joel’s favorite parts of serving with the Army Band. Performing with the 338th Army Band has also allowed Joel to help inspire many musicians through great performances, such as the 2014 Michigan Music Educators Conference.

The Midland Concert Band has been blessed for many years with great musicians and a great audience who all have a collective love for the performing arts. Joel plans to continue in the tradition of the MCB to bring great performances of both traditional and new music to the Midland community. Joel also plans to utilize a touch of excitement and his passion for education to both entertain and inspire all audience members during every concert.
